Cyprus Information
History
The strategic position of Cyprus as the most easterly island
in the Mediterranean and at the crossroads of Europe, Africa
and Asia, has made it a target for military acquisition since
the Bronze Age. The following is a potted history of the major
military and political events in the history of Cyprus:
Cyprus has been part of the Assyrian empire, the Persian
empire, the Roman empire, gaining a form of independence for
about 80 years before coming under further Roman rule, then
Islamic rule, Byzantine rule, the Crusaders, Venetian rule,
Ottoman rule and more recently British rule, until gaining
independence in 1960.
